Millennials are the most frequent travelers; short trips are gaining popularity

One third of the trip plans created by American travelers on TripHobo were by the users belonging to the age group of 25-34. For these millennials, travel is a lifestyle and this is giving an overall boost to the number of trips taken by an individual.

Taking the opportunity to travel whenever possible, short trips and weekend getaways is expected to be the most preferred choice of trips by Americans. 17-20% of the total plans created by American travelers are for a duration of 3 to 4 days highlighting the popularity of short trips. Data also shows that women are very involved in the trip planning process.

More of multi-city travel; International travel, the most fancied choice

The American traveler is looking to explore newer and varied experiences as evidenced by the rise in multi-city trip plans. One fourth of all the trip plans created on TripHobo were to more than one city. International travel is also garnering more interest and more than half of the trips planned by American travelers were to international destinations.

Owing to their proximity to the United States, Canada and Mexico were the most visited international destination from USA, particularly the cities of Vancouver and Cancun. A fourth of the the total international trips were to European countries, Italy being the top choice. United Kingdom and France were next in line. Asian destinations like Japan and Thailand garnered a lot of interest from American tourists and a 5% of total international trips were planned to either of these countries. This trend is predicted to continue in the coming year.

Big Apple and Sin City continue to dominate domestic travel

The most popular destination for domestic travelers was New York City. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco followed. The top cities saw an influx of tourists and the trend is expected to continue. One eighth of the total trip plans, were created for these cities. Number of Trips to National Parks is also expected to rise based on the data, with Grand Canyon National Park being the most preferred choice.

American travelers preference: Architecture, History & Parks. Museums, not so much

Considering the attractions that were visited by the American travelers, the ones with history and fascinating architecture like Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and The Eiffel Tower were the most frequented. Historical attractions like the Colosseum (Rome, Italy), Sagrada Familia (Barcelona, Spain) and Basilica Di Santa Maria Del Fiore (Florence, Italy) were also a top choice. Amongst parks and theme parks, Central Park, Stanley Park and Disney World ranked high in the tourist preference. Surprisingly museums were not the most preferred choice in attractions.

Budget hotel for stay; vacation rentals slowly finding their way

Although the millennials are gradually switching to Vacation Rentals, Hostels and Motels for accommodation on their trip, the Budget Hotels are still the most booked accommodation in 2016. 52% of the total accommodations booked were Budget Hotels, and Vacation Rentals saw a rise of about 24%.
