NASA Research Announcement, Call for Proposals: Topics in Human Research Program

Proposals accepted for Human Health Countermeasures, Human Factors, and Behavioral Performance

HOUSTON, TX, April 20, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- NASA is soliciting proposals for research investigations in support of the Human Research Program's (HRP) applied research goals and objectives. The accepted proposals will be responsive to research emphases outlined in the Human Exploration Research Opportunities (HERO) document, Appendix D:

Do fluid shifts in the brain and spine during spaceflight have physiological and behavioral effects?
How can exercise protocols be enhanced for Long-Duration Exploration Missions (LDEM) to improve stress tolerance, adaptability, and behavioral health?
Can an astronaut's senses be conditioned for better cognitive performance and behavioral health during spaceflight?

This NASA Research Announcement (NRA) was released on March 30, 2018. Step 1 proposals are due on May 1, 2018. Invited Step 2 proposals are due on July 30, 2018.

Appendix D of the HERO NRA and associated documentation can be found at:

The HERO NRA, including all open appendices, is available through the NASA Research Opportunities homepage at: https://tinyurl.com/NASA-HERO-2017

All categories of United States (U.S.) institutions are eligible to submit proposals in response to this NRA. Principal Investigators may collaborate with universities, Federal Government laboratories, the private sector, and state and local government laboratories. In all such arrangements, the applying entity is expected to be responsible for administering the project according to the management approach presented in the proposal. NASA's policy is to conduct research with non-U.S. organizations on a cooperative, no exchange-of-funds basis.

NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) is dedicated to discovering the best methods and technologies to support safe, productive human space travel. HRP enables space exploration by reducing the risks to astronaut health and performance using ground research facilities, the International Space Station, and analog environments. This leads to the development and delivery of an exploration biomedical program focused on: informing human health, performance, and habitability standards; the development of countermeasures and risk mitigation solutions; and advanced habitability and medical support technologies. HRP supports innovative, scientific human research by funding more than 300 research grants to respected universities, hospitals, and NASA centers to over 200 researchers in more than 30 states.
